Notary documents relating to Bartholomew Brown (~1820-1910) and family of Megantic County

The notation after a Notary Public's name refers to the standardized location of the fond, or collection of documents, within Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec, or BAnQ, which is the official archive repository for the Province of Quebec, located online at https://www.banq.qc.ca/.

• There may still be other notarial documents that may mention Bartholomew but did not require his signature. This list of documents is not considered complete.
• Bartholomew Brown has been able to sign his own name in all documents.
Those people that haven't, or can't, used an "X" or a "+" inside their name, along with a "his/her/their mark" or "sa/leurs marque(s)" designation around the name.

• Indexes compiled by Ancestry.com have been insufficient. Some index entries are missing names, have wrong names, very poorly spelled names, or some acts not indexed altogether. Looking at every page in a fond has been necessary.

• It is very common for many first names, in addition to titles, to be abbreviated: Wm. or Wme. (William), Chas. or Chs. (Charles), Jas. or Jms. (James), Geo (George), Ant. (Antoine), Frs. (Francois), Thos. (Thomas), Jos. (Joseph), Benj. (Benjamin), Mme (Madame), Rd. (Reverend), Vve (veuve or widow)
Sometimes the abbreviations are stylized with the secondary letters superscripted: W^m (William), M^r (Mister), M^rs (Misses), S^r (Senior), R^d (Reverend), V^ve (widow), etc.

• The original documents are not bi-lingual. They are either in English or en Français.
• The fond as a whole for Augustin Schambier is in very poor condition. The majority of documents have degraded, rendering many parts of the pages unreadable. Some pages are missing entirely.
• Many of John Johnston's early documents contain a second notary (until Act # 277?)(Incl. #380?).
