[page 21] Our Souches Families The Anglophones - Nugent by Gloria Wallace-Trépanier The Nugent family is originally from Ireland. Andrew Nugent Sr., 1706 in County Down, Ireland. After arriving in Canada, he worked in Quebec for a time and settled in Ste-Agathe, where he married Honorah Brown. They had five children. [photo] John and Sam Nugent (1914). Photo taken on their 77th birthday. John and Samuel, twins born on May 24, 1837, Elizabeth born May 25, 1840, Mary Ann born February 28, 1843 and Honorah born November 20, 1847. In 1855, they left Ste-Agathe to settle in The 5th Range of Leeds, on lots 7B and 8A that they cultivated for the rest of their lives. Andrew was a counselor. He died on February 25, 1890 and Honorah Brown Nugent on February 27, 1890. While her husband was being funeraled, Honorah died. Andrew Nugent was back in Quebec City at the same time as his brother John. They were separated when they got off the boat and never saw each other again. Samuel Nugent Sr, son of Andrew Nugent and Honorah Brown, was born on May 24, 1837, in St. Agatha, where he later attended school, with his family residing near where Lincoln Eagen now lives. He moved to Lots 7B and 8A in Rank 5 when he was aged 8. He married Janet Allan and they had 12 children. Agnes married Thomas George Nutbrown. They had a farm in Leeds' B-Row. Honorah was a schoolteacher and married Andrew MacRae. Their farm was located in Rank 3 of Leeds. Andrew Nugent married May Canfield. They had a farm in Prince Albert, Sask. Elizabeth was a schoolteacher. Charles, married to Mary McLaughlin, was a farmer in Prince Albert, Sask. while John, married to Caroline McDougall, had a farm in Maymount, Sask. Jamima was a seamstress and had married Charles Clous ton of Edmonton, Alberta. Margaret was a schoolteacher married to Albert Frizzell. They had their farm in Leeds Row 4. George died at the age of 2. Samuel never married. Lydia married Lorne Davidson who had a farm in Rank 11 of Leeds. Samuel Nugent Sr owned a farm on Lot 6 of Range 10. He died in 1921 and his wife on [page 22] September 28, 1930. They are buried in Kinnear's Mills Anglican Cemetery. Samuel Nugent Jr (Sam) is the son of Samuel Nugent and Janet Allan. I1 was born on November 20, 1891 on Lot 6 of Rank 10. He attended the Rank 10 school in Leeds, where his first teacher was Margaret Allan. He was to participate in the work of the f'erme and return the wood. He liked to slide in a wild sleigh. At that time, the school year lasted 5 months. I1 attended vigils and worked the farm. In 1919 he bought his father's farm and remained there until 1969 when he retired and moved to the village of Kinnear's Mills. He was a consultant for 19 years in Leeds. I1 died on May 20, 1985. John Nugent was the son of Andrew Nugent and Honorah Brown. He was born on May 24, 1837 in Ste-Agathe, where he attended school. His family moved to Lot 7B and 8A in Range 5 when he was 18 years old. Thomas Andrew, born Il September 1868, died around 1940. Nora, born September 28, 1872, died March 6, 1875. Samuel, born May 7, 1874, died December 14, 1947. Mary Ann, born July 9, 1877, died in 1881. William David, born July 5, 1879, died in 1881. Andrew, born July 17, 1885, died April 10, 1965. John Nugent bought his father's farm, which he lived on for the rest of his life. I1 was a counselor. He died on June 12, 1915 and his wife Mary Johnston Nugent on February 6, 1934. Andrew Nugent Jr was the son of John Nugent and Mary Johnston. He was born on July 17, 1885 in Rank 5, Lots 7B and 8A of Leeds. He attended Kinnear's Mills and Rank 10. He was farming with his father when he married Isabella Appleton Murray on September 28, 1909. They had seven children. John Edgar, born October 13, 1910 who married Gladys McKell. He has now passed away but his wife resides in Ottawa. Effie died in infancy. Leslie Murray, born February 26, 1915, Kenneth Robert born May 28, 1917 married Eileen Henderson. They live in Lennoxville. Clarke William, born on November 1, 1920, married Bernice Walker and they live in Toronto. Ronald Allan, born December 24, 1922 is single. Viola Isabel, born on February 6, 1924 married Gerald Patterson. They reside at Caistor Centre, Ont. Viola died on June 19, 1990. Andrew Nugent was a councillor and school commissioner. He also worked at the Consei 1 of the Anglican Church. A brother and sister died of diphtheria [page 23] [photo] Andrew Nugent and Isabella Appleton Murray (28 Sep 1909). within a week. The bodies of the dead children had to be taken out of one of the windows of the house and buried because the whole family was in quarantine. He was a member of L.O.L. 559. He was a salesman of agricultural machinery such as milk separators, plows, etc. Isabella Murray Nugent died on September 3, 1954 and Andrew on April 20, 1965. Leslie Murray Nugent (Murry) is the son of Andrew Nugent and Isabella Murray. He was born on February 26, 1915 while his family resided on Lots 7B and 8A of Range 5. He attended Kinnear's Mills Central School. He also attended Johnson High School, Thetford Mines, for a year. In his youth, he loved winter slides and hockey. He also played football and softball at Kinnear's Mills. He was involved in the work of the farm and helped his mother at home. He remembers attending two services on Sundays: his mother was Presbyterian and his father Anglican. On August 18, 1945, he married Muriel Joy Thompson. They have three children. Donald George, born on August 3, 1947, lives in Montreal. Mabel Judy Nugent, born September 12, 1950 married Alfred Melanson and lives in Bathurst, N.B. Dale Andrew, born December 1, 1952 lives on the farm with his parents. Murray has had a farm on Lot 1B and 2A of Range 11 for more than a few years. He was also a carpenter. He is treasurer of I.O.O.F. and secretary of L.O.L. 559. He has been treasurer of Candlish United Church since October 1955, served as a councillor and for 28 years served as secretary-treasurer of the Leeds South School Board. He was known as "Mr. Murray" of his French-speaking friends. Murray Nugent died on January 27, 1993. Murray and Joyce were both very active in their community. Judy married Alfred Melanson on April 5, 1975. Their children: Cheryl born on April 15, 1978, Warren born on May 8, 1980 and Daren born on December 10, 1981. They live in Bathurst, N.B. Dale married to Hélène Doré on Aoat 17, 1991. Hélène's children: Carl Grant, born 13 July 1973, married to Claudine Chagnon on June 20, 1992, Sarah Aubuchon born on November 4, 1978 and Fabienne Aubuchon born on October 30, 1979.
